Who has to register – and by when?

Anyone who moves into a flat must register with the registration office within two weeks of moving in. This is set out in § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG). It applies to everyone moving in – including children.

The City of Leipzig points out that late registration can result in a fine. Plan the appointment right after your move.

Documents you need

  • ID card or passport of everyone registering – originals
  • Landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung; according to the City of Leipzig it can also be submitted later)
  • recommended: birth or marriage certificate
  • the completed registration form

The landlord confirmation is issued by the landlord or a person they authorise. Among other things, it contains the landlord's name and address, the move-in date, the address of the flat and the names of the people required to register (§ 19 BMG). If the landlord refuses to confirm, you must inform the registration office without delay.

Citizens' office or online

In Leipzig you can register at any citizens' office (Bürgerbüro) – regardless of the district you live in. Appointments are available online or via the citizens' hotline 0341 115.

Registration is also possible online. You need an ID card with the online ID function activated, the AusweisApp and a BundID account. According to the City of Leipzig, registration is free of charge.

What comes after registration

With your registration certificate you can move on: bank account, employer, health insurance, school or day care. After a first registration in Germany you also receive your tax identification number by post. What else is due is shown in our checklist for the first weeks.
